Advancing Hydrogen in Michigan Working Group

Hydrogen is the principal fuel used in fuel cell technology, which generates electricity that can be used to power vehicles, or to produce electricity for buildings, businesses or utility companies.

The primary focus of this working group has been a database project managed by NextEnergy which is part of the US Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Fleet Demonstration and Validation Program, and which concluded in 2006. Participants included automotive OEMs, energy companies, government entities, and others having a stake in Hydrogen infrastructure in the State of Michigan.

Along with developing a database of hydrogen permitting officials, this effort included streamlining the permitting process for hydrogen fueling and infrastructure facilities, as well as documenting experiences with the permitting process to facilitate the experience of others. In addition, the group developed education and awareness programs for emergency first responders and local officials to help advance the growth of hydrogen infrastructure necessary for broader utilization of the fuel.

Having met its objectives, this working group no longer meets as a formal group, but continues to refine the database on an ad hoc basis.
