Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Hydrogen continues to offer some of the greatest potential as an alternative energy source, with opportunities to be used in a variety of applications including powering vehicles, running turbines or fuel cells to produce electricity, and generating heat and electricity for buildings.

With NextEnergy’s help, key Michigan stakeholders continue to advance the research and development of technologies and processes in this emerging industry.

Large-scale Fuel Cell Generator Validation

With funding from the US Department of Energy, NextEnergy is partnering with DTE Energy and Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Systems to validate systems and components for large-scale electronic power generation from fuel cells. The project is using test bays in the Microgrid Power Pavilion at NextEnergy to collect data while functioning in a live-running environment.

Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure

To support the US Department of Energy’s Fuel Cell Vehicle and Infrastructure Program, NextEnergy partnered with the Chrysler Corporation and BP to establish a hydrogen fueling station in downtown Detroit.

The first such facility in the nation to be sited in a core urban environment, this provides a critical proving ground to validate emerging technologies – in both cold and warm weather – and to demonstrate the safety and viability of such an infrastructure in our communities.

Located on the NextEnergy campus in Tech Town, it is within an hour of most of research efforts in Michigan to develop fuel cell powered vehicles.
